Bio

Dr. Mark Bigland-Pritchard is a Canadian by choice, who moved from England to Borden, Saskatchewan in 2005. He has recently moved from there to Nutana, Saskatoon. He is married to Jan, with daughter Anna at university and adult stepson John living independently.

Mark is Director of Low Energy Design Ltd, a technical consultancy firm specialising in energy efficiency, renewables, green building and architectural physics. He has worked in energy consultancy for much of his professional life in both private and public sectors.

Mark currently works mostly on behalf of the voluntary sector, including as lead technical researcher/consultant for Green Energy Project Saskatchewan and as technical consultant for Saskatchewan’s Green Directory. He also held lecturing posts in energy at two British universities for nearly ten years, and for 3 years coordinated the (British) Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Mark has two engineering degrees and a doctorate in architectural physics (focussing on moisture issues in strawbale construction). He has a particular interest in building a Saskatchewan economy whose prosperity is based on sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture and sustainable manufacturing; he sees an urgent need to catch up with Europe, California and China in the greentech sector which has been neglected and marginalised by the present government.

A Mennonite in active church membership (Osler Mennonite Church), and married to an Anglican minister, his green politics is rooted in a Christian concern for peace, social justice, and right relationship with the earth and other living beings. In Borden, Mark chaired the village community development committee for two years and was a member of the Lions club; in Nutana he is part of a group planning a neighbourhood-based energy efficiency and solar power project.
